No, we're not talking about fan-made erotic comics here. The term "doujin" aims at anything derived from a copyrighted creation by a fan, and that practice being very widely spread in Japan, it's no surprise that the Game Doujin Music field is pretty big and got it's fair share of hidden gems.

Now, how could we, poor non japanese things, get to know and, better, get to actually listen to these numerous arrangements of our favourite tunes?

There are of course numerous ways, like buying them off Yahoo Japan, downloading them from winny, or get in contact with the musicians themselves and negociate the buying of their CDs via international mail.

The goal of this thread is of course to make the whole VGM community benefit from all this, and as I and a few others started collecting a few of these VGM Doujin albums, I thought I might list all the ones I know here, and get to make you guys share what you have or simply enjoy what's already been collected so far.

I'll list only the official available for purchase albums here. There are of course many talented arrangers making their music available for free on their sites, but they're by far too numerous to list.

So, here it goes:

Atsushi Fukai
http://www.mushi.net/

That one might be the most famous of the Doujin Music makers abroad. Some of his albums have been floating around for a while. Here are the ones I got:

Cool and Create
http://homepage3.nifty.com/beatmario/

Cool and Create is, as far as I could understand, a collective of several musicians remixing VGM. They're usually into the techno/dance thing, but do it in what I'd call that special japanese "VGM flavour" and thus doesnt sound like anything you'd hear on OC Remix. There really are some excellent stuffs.

Well, that's all for now. I'm sharing all of this and more on VGMCentral. I really think that stuff is worth interest and that these new, refreshing tunes should be spreaded among the VGM community. If people care, that is. ^_^

Feel free to add your own discoveries here. I know some people like Teioh are also killing their eyes looking at winny in order to find that kind of things, as some of the stuffs listed here were found by him, so if you're also that kind of freak, please let us know what you got. =)

Very nice niki =) Just what I wanted =)

It seems like my favourite, MintJam, has announced another album, 2nd GIG #Break Out. This album seems to be original compositions-only, but that's great, since their original compositions are fantastic! http://www.mintjam.net/newalbum.htm

I would like to mention Toshinor Hiramatsu's homepage, Sword of Justice (http://www.h7.dion.ne.jp/~soj/). He has arranged and peformed some groovy tunes, and he seems to be related to Woodsoft. I would recommend the Zan: Yaksa Enbukyoku arrange in the downloads section (the one above the Lost Child one).

Ack, good news indeed, but I would have prefered a mix of orginal compositions and arrangements like the last one. <3 their CT track. ^_^

Doujin music rules
You should mention that there are A LOT more Doujin Groups around creating Gamemusic Remixes. Especially for the more popular stuff, like Ragnarok Online. There are 50+ Doujin CDs about RO i believe.
Maybe i could search for some links or something. I have a few Doujin Music News sites somewhere if you are interested.

Hi Niki,
Thanks for the informative list, so people can have a little direction to start with when exploring this area

I've listened to about half the albums you listed, courtesy of Secret Squirrel's ftp, and I'm definitially interested in checking out the rest of S.S.H.'s tunes, as his stuff really rocks.

Around 80% of doujin arranges are quite well done and enjoyable to listen to, but there's inevitably a rotten apple or two amidst all the other great stuff..

(as I found out when I tried out an ESPGaluda 'arrange' album.. It was practically a carbon-copy of the original tunes, with no changes whatsoever except slightly different main synth instruments.. boo!! I would have loved to hear some varying arranges of this great album...)

But yeah, in general the Japanese doujin music-makers sound better at capturing that "vgm spirit" than American OC-Remixers. Try some today!

Great work, niki :D
I think you've mentioned the most important ones that have albums floating around here. I must say I like EtlanZ most, because they're the only group who really cover any nice snes/nes music tune and arrange it to..slightly better quality ^^. Their Rockman Road to X album has been discovered in mp3 a short while ago, too (and it's their newest together with the second Romancing SaGa CD) :)
As for the groups that arrange H-Game music, they've done some great work, too. Recommendable would be anything Jun.A worked on (some Highway Fortress albums, but I think he also did music for Ragnarok Online Dojins). I've heard many people like Little Wing and Type-Moon, too ^^.
Here's a link anyone should be sure to check out:
http://www2.odn.ne.jp/morisato/mml/link.html
Most of the active groups are listed in there. Levolution was hosting a linklist once too when this Final Fantasy Dojin Concert was taking place but that's too long ago :/

niki
09-15-2004, 12:57 PM
New EtlanZ album found? Ack, too bad it's not the SaGa one, I'm not the Rockman fanatic. ^_^;

Another cool link to check daily is the Arrange Stream: http://music.readalittle.net/
Wake up and enjoy today's new VGM remixes. Sounds good, eh?

And yeah Carl, it's far to be like everything is excellent. Besides, I'm not the kind of collectors that keeps basically everything, so what I downloaded and listed here is only a selection according to my personal tastes. That scene is so huge that I believe anyone can be able to find *the* song he wanted arranged and never found. Gotta spend the time searching, though. =)

Neat. Thanks niki. I hope I can find a chance to listen to all these!

I am curious - we discussed this a bit earlier - could I include some of my own arrangements on my new CD, or would that be "trouble" (to quote Lindsey Buckingham)?

By the way ~ I started arranging Urban Trail for piano tonight, and tinkered with some Romancing SaGa 3 stuff too... :)

Oh, and MintJam sounds awesome so far! THANK YOU!

Later,

You have me drooling at 1 in the morning. NOT FAIR.

You know, dispite knowing of the huge fanremix community around here, I, being a total idoit, didn't even think that there might be a Japanese community for this too.

Sentence of Death from Hellion Sounds and EtlanZ's 2002 - Seiken Densetsu & Chrono Trigger Best Collection [Square Best Series Vol.3] are both so extremly drool-worthy. Especially since Sentence of Death has sound samples :D~~

I shall try to find a way to get them. The sweet music shall be mine!

Edit: Or, you know, I could search on the hub.
Edit #2: Which doesn't seem to work. XD

And well, for the majority, the albums listed here are of the semi-official category that is actually being sold and all, so I don't think you'll have trouble at all.

I just have to comment on how impressed I am with MintJam's works. I loved the rock/fusion style in both #gig's. My faves are Rude Performance, Strange Jam, Theme of Arcueid and of course Atlach=Nacha (red tint). Just started listening to their Mistral Note album and it's quite good as well. Hope we're able to obtain more of their stuff as they are easily the best vgm doujin out there.

Mint Jam is maybe my favorite group in all, the 1st track on 1st gig, Melty Blood (TRIBREATH) is one of the best songs i ever heard

Good to see there are more of those who really appreciate MintJam's work. I've always described their sound as "mint", or "fresh". So I think the band's title fits their music perfectly. Though their name could be reminiscent of Pearl Jam, I don't think they share too much when it comes to musical style. (Pearl Jam rocks too though.)

MintJam has released a couple of solo-albums:

BRINY AIR -POTENEKO ACADEMY ORIGINAL SOUND TRACKS-
MISTRAL NOTE -POTENEKO ACADEMY ORIGINAL SOUND TRACKS 2-
Ragnarok Online Arrange CD -MintJam / GRAVITY-
Ryouki ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK PLUS (DLRD-1002)
1st GIG #Awake
2nd GIG #Break Out
ATMOSPHERE -POTENEKO ACADEMY ORIGINAL SOUND TRACKS 1&2-

We miss those in red. Note that Atmosphere is the same as Briny Air and Mistral Note, just combined, and with two neat bonus tracks.

MintJam has composed music for to psychs games. One of those got a soundtrack, that's the Ryouki one on that list. They also did 2 tracks on two Zwei Trial games: the music they did for リリアンブレイド バラエティギフト was released on 2nd GIG. The music they did for Lillian Fantasy hasn't been released on a CD (yet).

My favourites by MintJam is, as of today, in no particular order:

Kung-fu Kitten -Nekomi Mix-
GG -Gibson Girl-
Theme of Arcueid
A rude performance
A rude performance -spicy Jam remix-
Rough Edge

It has been there for a long time... At least since the first time I visited their site... At least I think so.

You probably downloaded some of that off me, _DH_, before I deleted it. :p If I understand the text right, they did the theme song there, the one sung by the 9-yo... I can't say I like it too well.

Just want to say thanks a bunch for the list...Akineko now officially owns me (he/they own the Black Mages too, but only in a completely different way...) I'm enjoying their Air/Kanon album probably the most of all the doujins I've come across so far.

niki
01-25-2005, 08:39 PM
Yeah, Akineko really grew on me too. You start thinking "Yeah, another MIDI metal arranger" but... there is actually that extra thing that puts him above many others. One of my favourite songs by him might be "Clock Dance", track 5 of Raydrick. Shows well how he's an unusual doujin musician. =)

Just a heads up: Cocoebiz will be stocking some of the Woodsoft doujin albums for a paltry $15 apiece.

http://www.cocoebiz.com/catalog.php?id=352
http://www.cocoebiz.com/catalog.php?id=351
http://www.cocoebiz.com/catalog.php?id=353

IMO, all three of these are well worth the entry price and having originals of (especially the Legend of Xanadu album...That may be one of my new favorite arranged albums overall). One good thing about the Woodsoft albums is that, unlike some doujins (*cough* Atsushi Fukai) they are professionally pressed like a normal CD...I own their Falcom Collection one and it's pretty professionally made (though its' in the CD+ format).

Hopefully, coco will stock more doujin albums in the future...I'd love to score originals of Akineko's stuff, Mintjam's stuff, Hellion's stuff and Preludio (among others).

niki
03-06-2005, 06:15 PM
Awesome. I'm quite curious about the story behind that. =p

The Falcom Collection album you got is their first or second one?

GoldfishX
03-06-2005, 10:58 PM
The 1st one...I think I've seen that album in your VGMcentral share before (though a different rip than mine). I'm dying to hear the second one.

Just curious: Have you or Teioh (or anyone that normally finds these) come across any of Midi Mushi's more recent albums? He has a couple of Ys ones I'm eager to hear (Windtales, an Ys Battle album and a new Ys VI arrangement!). I actually tried to use that Winny program, but I couldn't figure it out...

BTW, for anyone that needs a little 'incentive' to get those three albums, I've put up a few samples in my Yahoo Briefcase. 2 from the LoX one and 1 apiece from the others. Hellion Sounds 'Sentence of Death' is already up...I'm planning on taking it down soon, since its' been up for several months now. I'll probably replace it with Preludio.

You're complaining about a single album update (The YK-2 one)? I'm more annoyed at seeing a bunch more Dragon Quest Symphonic Suites on there.

What's wrong with selling them? It's not like they're easily obtained through standard import methods. Plus it's not like she's jacking up the prices on them.

Grass-eatin'me
03-07-2005, 08:18 AM
Yes, doujins shouldn't be added to the db. The Suites should be there, however, as long as they are official, which I guess they are.

I know very well they are not easly obtainable, very very well. :P I tried to find stores stocking before christmas last year, and although there are quite a deal of japanese webshops, none of them will ship here. I would have to go through Jerold, and that's way to expensive. It's alright with me, but would everyone think it's alright for a store to sell unofficial products violating copyright laws?

Carl
03-07-2005, 08:39 AM
Unofficial doesn't always mean Unlicensed...

The page says that these cds are registered with JASRAC, which is Japan's equivalent to our BMI/ASCAP publishing organizations in the USA, so I think they did pay the owners for the rights to use the songs.

(Likewise how One Up Studios touts how their self-arrange albums are licensed from the copyright holder, it could also be the case with Woodsoft.)

Eriol
03-07-2005, 09:23 AM
How much does it cost to press a master disc for reproduction? I noticed that nearly all doujin invest a lot in the covers and liner notes but also use CD-Rs. Why can't they make the CDs just like the retail CDs? Is it cost?

I've got Project Dracula by Midimushi. It was in a batch of dojin rips that Carl got from Owen, but I hadn't been able to identify and verify until recently. What I heard was pretty good. However, I think it's an older one, and I haven't seen any of the newer ones on the Japanese p2p services.

Hey, I've seen that briefcase before...Oh yeah, it's mine. :smirk: Too bad they don't give me enough space to actually write the track name out and what album its' from.

The 1-10 tracks are the Preludio Final Fantasy arranged album. I have a few from the Woodsoft gang's Legend of Xanadu KLEENE in there as well (Toon and Like a Wind), the Airman Gameboy theme arranged by Phoenix and my arranged Zeromus collection, along with some official stuff.

I tend to cycle stuff now and then...Check back from time to time.

OK, so I got that cd -LOCUS- by Redeemer, which niki saw on Yahoo Japan auctions. My first Doujin cd purchase, yay.

Pretty good arrangements, most of them in a speedy synth-rock style, with a couple piano balads inbetween.

Isn't it ironic how the US wants to be like Japan, yet Japan wants to be like the US?

Problem is, who wants to pay $30 for a CD-R (After shipping) regardless of the quality of the music. I want to buy Atsushi Fukai's Project G and Project Dracula albums, but not at that kind of price. The Project G album isn't even 30 minutes long. So...

Oh well, if anyone knows where one can buy cheap copies or get them in lossless, please let me know! ;)

Just got the last album I was really awaiting, MTK2 lastest: Electric Light Plaza, which is one of their occasional piano solo albums by Kuboto Makinosuke. I love the guy, and the album is great. =p

New MinJam do rocks, though MintJam's purists will be surprised (sup Grass). What's also really astounding on the technical level is the lastest Serenade.

I found the new MintJam #3rd gig to be a bit of a disappointment compared to their other stuff mainly because they allowed the other group members to play a more prominent role in the album. TERRA's arrangements were average and kya's piano solos were boring. Not enough guitar solos/interludes in this album. The few tracks that setzer and a2c arranged were quite good as expected from those two especially "In Search of the Holy Sword" and the FFV main theme. A decent album overall but doesn't come close to their first two gigs. Here's hoping someone gets a hold of the Mushihimesama arrange album as the two samples on the MintJam site have me craving for more of it.

Reading your post DMA, I realised I downloaded that Mushihimesame arrange album months ago and never even extracted it. I'll do that now so it'll be waiting for you tomorrow. ^_^;

Guys, could somebody recommend me a doujin album which has orchestral atmosphere in it?

I actually like arranging VGM tracks, so you could probably listen to some of my works I put on VGMIX. Wish I could create some what similarly called doujin album (what we call if I make it in Indonesia?).

These tracks would probably help you recommend doujin album that suits me, as I am still learning to be a good composer. OK, here goes...!

Final Trigger (Final Fantasy VII + Chrono Trigger)

Marcapada (Chaos Seed)

Tiara Menari (Chaos Seed)

Tiara Menari 2 (Chaos Seed)

Tiara Menari 3 (Chaos Seed)

Hope you can enjoy and help me...

Wow, that's impressive Rama Himura. =P

I really can't think of any album having that kind of orchestral feeling to it, though. The most common arrange styles are metal/hard rock or technoish ones, all with that hard to define japanese way of doing game music.

You shouldnt waste time with that Crystal Festival you're getting now though, especially since your connection doesnt look that fast. Try full albums instead. How about trying Preludio's FF cd?

Wow Rama, I'm impressed! I can't say I can recommend any music to you, but I have to give you some compliments for your compositions! I totally dig your style, man - keep up the good work!

Oh, and if anyone does know of arrangements like this, well, yeah, spread the love. :)

Hey, thanks to you all, friends! Yeah, I am still doing many arrangements, and tose are the best I think.

Yes, so bit by bit everyone starts to understand how poor my connection is *crying*. But that's okay Niki, I will finish downloading them and I will go straight to your recommendation.

Metal's fine, too! I love kind of "Black Mages" style.

This is also the info, probably to give calming down atmosphere for those who are listening to doujin metal album. This is not doujin album, but rather fan-based album. I recommend this for those looking for relaxing VGM arrangements. You can also download other albums provided, but make sure you grab Relaxing VGM Style Vol. 2, 3, and 4 (latest).

I just downloaded the Relaxing VGM Style Vol. 4, and my composition (Marcapada) was there...! Unbelievable that it was chosen... *crying*

So, the album sounds nicer then. Oh yeah, if somebody would like to download some of my composition, please go here:

Even though I've had MintJam's stuff for awhile, I never really gave it a proper listen. My favorite is the Theme of Arcueid, and I just love the instrumental spacing, it has really good tone.

More or less, I've been listening to Crow's Claw's Final Fantasy Heavy Metal Arrange, and various Preludio, Seranade, and SSH stuff. The involvement of all the different members in various projects is kind of interesting to consider as well. It seems SSH is almost involved with all the hard rock/live bands.

Just stumbled across a website today, which looks to be a pretty HUGE Doujin Database/Release-Info page, with links to lots of the artists' pages too.

http://www.ahoge.com/

Didn't have much time to explore it, but it might be of some use to somebody.

Hi there!

I'm new here but i've been listening to game soundstrack for a while.
Recently i saw a killer instinct video with a final fantasy VI remixed music.
The matter is that i can't figure out what artirst made it!

The music is a remix from the Decisive battle theme and the video is located here : http://www.blood-sports.net/ki/kimult/kimovies/kimovies.shtml (part one video) and the music is begining at 2:02.

I already checked the Hellions songs - sentence of death - song, the dark mages version (but there can be another version i don't know) , and the powerglove one. no one correspond :'(

If anyone can tell me the name of the version i'm talking of, i would realy apreciate!

In advance thanks!

Fulgore.

(ps : sorry for my bad english, i'm french :) )

Salut (Hi!) :)

This remix is from S.S.H. (Saitama Saisyu Heiki)

You can find this song on his mp3 download page:
http://www.ssh.ne.jp/file/mp3_main.htm

You can find it under the name of "決戦~The Decisive Battle Ver2.01".

If you haven't checked there already, SSH has a TON of links to other mixers (some of which are probably mentioned already).

http://www.ssh.ne.jp/file/link.htm

SSH has great stuff (though I like the Broken Thunder version of Metal Squad better).

A bit OT, but I used Travel Demon for a Super Castlevania IV video:

It's quite shocking there isn't a large database for doujin music considering how popular it seems to be in Japan. I've been using the site SS linked to above for a while now as well, but it's seriously lacking and a lot of the time google doesn't come up with much either.

I used to be huge fan of Mintjam. I'd listen to the albums on repeat almost daily, but for some reason I went really off them. Lately I've been listening to Barbarian On The Groove, dBu Music, IOSYS, Sound Horizon and Scinicade.

Scinicade has a new album out and it's FANTASTIC, anyone interested in trying them should just grab the new album which is called Permafrost. Grab it on share as it's very popular on there I was getting like 10MB/s downloading it. I do warn anyone interested in trying them to avoid Project 2006 which was really disappointing.

Do you think this has more to do with greater enforcement of illegal downloads by doujin composers than big studios or because doujin is still small in comparison to big studios? I heard some sites that hosted Doujin were requested to remove them by the composers (I think Earth Japan Soft might have been one of them).

Sorry for taking so long to reply, I don't visit SD that often because it's usually quite inactive. I don't think it has anything to do with illegal downloads, because most database sites are only information on tracklists, composers and what not and Doujin composers always have a way of getting their work out, somehow. Just look at any of the major Japanese P2P networks that are flooded with Doujin music.

I guess in comparison to original game music, there isn't a lot of Doujin music, but I still don't understand why there isn't a large database on Doujin music because like I said in my original post it seems to be really popular, at least on the Japanese P2P networks and through places like last.fm.

Also, MintJam released a new album just recently. Perhaps this will re spark my interest in them. The album is called 'Reincarnation' and it can be found on Share like most Doujin music. I haven't listened to it fully yet, but so far it seems a lot less upbeat than previous albums.

Don't worry about the long delay in reply, Lowe. BTW, have you noticed what a popular thread this is? Over 10,000 views...

If Doujin is popular, but there isn't a large database containing the music then there are only a couple other things I can think of. Perhaps the music is so hard to find that it isn't widely disseminated. But they have internet shops, so the people who want the music will surely know how to get it.

This leads me to believe that there simply isn't somebody with the money to set up a Doujin database. Legal issues aside, gigabytes of data transfer per month is a lot to pay for. That would be my guess based on what you have said. Or maybe it's something else.

I think I am going to have to look into some of those P2P networks as there are a couple albums I was interested in.

Lowe

Heh or maybe I think it's more popular than it actually is.

Anyway, I found a nice database. Seems to have a lot of the less popular artists.

Otokei (http://oddb.main.jp/) covers more than just Touhou stuff, but I guess that one can be very useful for the crazy Touhou collectors. =p

Lowe

To be honest, I had no idea that site was for only Touhou stuff. I'm so used to downloading huge batches of Doujin music, listening to it once and dumping it in a folder. >_>
