These themes aren't limited to RPGs. Like town themes, stage, world, and dungeon themes have a lot of diversity in them as well, which is why I like them so much.
My favorites are:
Castlevania: SotN - Finale Toccatta - This haunting toccatta progresses more than many classical based themes I've heard in other games. It starts out with the low cello rhythm that is joined with the foreboding organ melody that is carried throughout the entire song as it slowly builds into one of the most haunting and engaging songs I've heard.
R-Type Delta - Stage Four - One of the best stage themes to one of the greatest scrolling shooter ever, the combination of orchestral and rock (synced with the level) is one of the best examples of ingenuity in VGM. The rock rhythms from the guitars and drums that support the strings and horns make this one of the most epic stage themes I've heard. It gets even better when it approaches its climax and literally goes haywire with techno rhythms and mechanical noises before the concluding piano reprise of the original opening rhythms.
Ghost in the Shell: Megatech Body - Spectre - An incredible techno theme, the pulsing drum rhythm combined with the light piano melody creates one of my favorite action themes ever.
Final Fantasy VIII - The Landing - I never expected the music in FFVIII to be so epic. This song alone was enough to hook me on that game with its heroic brass and intense string melodies. It's possibly one of my most favorite Nobuo Uematsu themes ever.
Vagrant Story - Limestone Quarry - The metallic piano melody, intense percussion, and heroic brass support elevates this song to a level of intesity that is almost unprecedented outside of Hitoshi Sakimoto's work. Incredible.
Legaia Duel Saga - End of the World - Though the game hasn't been released yet, the dark, brooding melody created by the oppressive horn melodies, tense snare drum rhyrhms, and tense string interludes make this one of Hitoshi Sakimoto's best dungeon themes ever.
Breath of Fire 4 - Dying Wish - A very dark oriental inspired theme that fits the mood of the Fou Empire very well. The drum rhythm and flute melody are perfect examples of how innovative Yoshino Aoki is as a composer.
Chrono Trigger - Ocean Palace - Simply one of the finest Yasunori Mitsuda themes ever in its climactic tone.
Xenogears - Omen - The theme for the Tower of Babel and Deus is perfectly haunting for the mysterious setting is which its used. The ominous piano melody and percussion made this an instant favorite of mine in the game and on the OST.
Turok 2: Seeds of Evil - Port Adia - Thougb I've unfortunately been unable to play this game, the theme for this stage alone makes me want to get it anyway. It has such an epic mood that keeps getting progressively more and more intense as the song progresses through its powerful violen melodies and drum rhythms.
So, what are yours?
