View Full Version : Argh, I scratched a rare VGM CD!!!

Damn my dexterity!

I scratched the CD when I bumped it into the corner of the CD case.

It is a fairly deep scratch. I can feel the scratch when I run my finger on the surface.

Can anything save it?

What a pity.
The last chance is to use a CD cleaner. You can get them at any computer store. I rescued a lot of CDs by using it. Depends on the intensity of the scratch, though.
Btw, what "rare" soundtrack was it?

Hudson Game Music Collection 1993 (Japanese edition)

It had some nice TurboDuo CD tunes!!! Argh!!!
*traumatized*

Anybody have access to a CD sander? I think the disc needs to be sanded down...

Musharraf

What??? You want to sand your disc? Well, I don't know if you can still use it afterwards. But oh well, it can't get worse anymore...
I used to sand some CD ones, but I never managed it to make them work again...

Well, if I pay $30 for a Game Doctor MD, and it doesn't work, I'm out $30 anyway...I'd rather put that money toward a better solution.

Does it even NEED fixing, Eriol?

Doesn't it play smooth anymore? Normally, most of the better CD players can emulate and correct over scratches. It's bad though, if even the error correction doesn't do it anymore for you. I don't seriously think that your CD may be "repaired".

I heard things like CD Doctor and whatnot change things for worse.

There is, however, some plastic "paste" (I haeard about this once) you may use that dries totally clean and may be polished. I've never used this one.

Good luck with that one.

Uhm, I don't want to sound pessimistic, but I have the feeling that we have to do it with a rather big scratch and that it might be very very very hard to recover your treasure...
Well, grab MP3s in the future, cause they can not get any scratches. I'm sorry but I don't have any better advice. I feel bad.

Rince

Well, but (as I had it happen to me in the past) MP3's are not safe, either. Just think about HD headcrash. And who has the means to back up his 1000 album VGM collection without a DVD burner (and even with it, it's a bit hard to do.)

Nothing's totally safe. Ahem, but we don't want to discourage Eriol, nonono ;)

Game Doctor repaired my old copies of FFVII and FFT. But that's because it's designed for games, not music CDs. I don't see how you expect to fix it with a Game Doctor.

I'd just get one of those CD cleaners from a computer store. It got all of the junk off of my Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete CD that game with the game. Before I removed the plastic looking junk on it it would barely play to Boss Battle before quitting, but now it's as good as new.

Eriol

This isn't gunk. This is a scratch. Almost all the CD cleaners just clean the CD and remove gunk, not scratch wounds...

Rince, I'm a fucking CD narcissist. Even if the CD plays fine, it's a scratch, a blemish!!!

Rince

Well, then you'd have to look for this paste stuff I've heard and seen about once. It's something like epoxide resin. I'd try my luck with that.

But being the fucking narcissist you are, you may fuck up the whole thing with trying to make it fucking flawless again.

I know how you feel, I take GREAT care of my things too, and I'd hate to have a scratch in those flawlessly shining little CDs.

Your best solution would be to sell your CD to someone who doesn't care about condition, and buy a mint copy.

It's rough that it happened, but people have made worse mistakes at a much more significant cost than this. My boss' wife managed to do a couple thousand dollars damage to their car in the driveway. :-/ Insurance doesn't always cover silliness, so he had to eat the expense. So just clench your teeth and take it in stride.

LOL, but first of all, you have to find such a stupid person who would actually buy it.
I don't know, but as far as I know, CDs does not work anymore if the scratch is deep enough...

The CD still plays. But SS, I can't replace this CD. It's 1993 and fairly rare.

It's not the only copy, so it's replacable. It'll just take some time and patience. Heh, isn't the search half of the enjoyment, anyway? ^_~

A bunch of Hudson albums just sold on Ebay.

Eriol - try some nice clear anti-persperant. Rub it on, let it dry and LIGHTLY LIGHTLY clean it off. Works HALFWAY decently.

*faints* Please tell me its still copyable??? If it has a scratch, you will survive. As long as it plays, and you can at least copy it, put it away before you hurt it anymore!

One was on ebay just a few days ago, ended though, at 50 something I think. It's not all THAT rare, I've seen it pop up a lot in the last few weeks, at least 3 times I do believe.

Anyway, you could go to any used book store that resells cds and ask to use their cd resurfacing machine. Any store that sells used cds should have one. I know book-off HAS to, I've gotten cds from there almost every time I go to the city, and there's absolutely nothing wrong on the cds whatsoever.

All they do is strip the bottom layer off the cd, leaving the next layer. I don't know how many times you can do it before it becomes weaker and/or unreadable, but it's probably a lot.

*EDIT*

HEY, how dare you mishandle a Hisaishi cd like that! You better pray his tracks weren't the ones you scratched, or you'll have my wrath upon you. ;) I weep for Hisaishi.

Guys, I scratched the Hudson 93 one from ebay. That was $10 and I SCRATCHED THE CD!!! ARGH! The scratch is radial so all of the tracks have a scratch. Fortuntately, it is radial, so the error-correction of CD players can recover.

Who's Hiasashi? He had tracks on the 93 one?

There are a few stores in the East Village that sell used CDs, but as far as I can tell, they don't have a CD resurfacer. They actually check the CD before they buy it. I don't know about Book Off. I've actually seen some CDs in not so great condition. I'd have to look deeper.

The next time you go into the city, could you let me know if any of these stores would offer to charge for a service?

I haven't tried copying it. I would rather resurface the CD first. Or sell it for $10.

Hey, Seph, trying to get more active here? Much appreciated! ;)

Stephen: Hisaishi had tracks on 91 and 94, I'm told. My mistake. He did part of the Tengai Makyou Manjimaru soundtrack (Track 1-7, 17, off the top of my head) and almost all the Studio Ghibli stuff (Mononoke Hime, Nausicaa, Spirited Away, etc). He's my favourite composer.

I will check the next time I go into the city for you, and let you know, but chances are it won't be for a whlie. I'm working 40 hours a week and taking 14 credits at school. It's kinda rough, so I don't have much free time. It'll probably be sometime on Christmas break.

Rince: Yep. SDF is like GFF, but minus all the idiots and leeches.

That's fine Seph. I'll keep that in mind when I run into the city as well.
Hopefully, my CD can be repaired... *sniff*

You and your analness. At least you *have* the cd though man. It could be worse ya know!

I heard candle wax can repair CDs. Anybody ever try this? Sounds similar to wvlpvp's idea.

Oh, and Eriol. Learn to use the edit feature. It's not THAT fukking hard. You aren't going to miss anything in the extra 30 seconds it takes. And it makes you look professional. Should be something somebody like you would want to be attaining, hearing your anal bitchiness about this CD.

What are you talking about? Editing my posts? I do that. If you are talking about combining posts, I do that occasionally. Combining posts does not necessarily do anything for professionalism. I'm not doing for post counts either. So, I don't understand what you gain by admonishing me on that point.

Would you like to buy the CD, since you don't seem to care about CD condition?

Sorry, but I do tend to take everything people say seriously unless it has a smiley somewhere. =P
