View Full Version : Your favorite battle theme

What would you say?
Here are my favorites:

3rd place: Mystic Quest Legend - Boss Battle : Noisy SNES sound, but amazing nevertheless. Especially the instrumentation. It's so exciting and funny at the same time. I always enjoy listen to it.

2nd place: Final Fantasy Tactics - Decisive Battle : I could list all FF Tactics battle themes cause they're all astounding. But this one has to be my favorite out of all Tactics themes. It's exciting, powerful, and perfectly represents the dark mood of Final Fantasy Tactics.

1st place : Final Fantasy X - Summoned Beast Battle : The ultimative winner. Never heard a better battle theme before. It is not techno, but also quite fast, powerful, exciting. This track wins the "Musharraf is completely fascinated" award. Over six minutes long, it kicks your ass from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean and back. Don't miss that. It's impossible to die without having listened to it.

Now I wait for your opinions :)
Share your favorites and please explain why you chose them!

Well, I'll just list my top ten in no particular order. Most of them will be boss themes though. Of course, battle themes aren't merely limited to RPGs.

Eternal Arcadia - Armada Battle - This song is the epitome of intense boss themes with its furious percussion, epic brass melody, and powerful strings. It's easily a must listen to.

R-Type Delta - Last Dance! - It's one of the most incredible final boss themes I've ever heard with its operatic composition. It could almost be like a "Carmina Burana" for the PSX.

Shadow Hearts - China Ogre - It's one of the highlights of the OST and fits the game perfectly. The distorted, eerie voices, intense strings, and cryptic percussion makes this one of my favorite boss themes to blast at higher volumes.

Saga Frontier 2 - Todfiend - Light and fast with a blazing rhythm, this song is one of the best battle themes ever composed by Masashi Hamauzu. I can eaily set this on repeat and listen to it for more than a half hour at a time.

Breath of Fire 4 - A Raging Emperor's Banquet - This is easily one of the most unique near final boss themes I've ever heard. Hearing it in the battle with the Tyrant is one game experience that just can't get any more powerful. It's a very sinister chakra that uses a very intense sitar melody and tabla rhythm. The flute used in it elevates it to a level of perfection.

Front Mission 3 - Aggression - It's possibly the best battle theme in the game at five minutes long and demonstrates just how great the game's techno is. The rhythm, melody, and instrumentation progresses and changes constantly throughout the song so that it rarely gets boring. If I knew more about techno I would try to describe it because its such an amazing battle theme.

Guilty Gear X - A Solitude That Asks Nothing In Return - My favorite song on the OST, this hard, powerful song demonstrates just how amazing GG music can get. It's a must hear.

Einhander - Thermosphere - The theme to the second to the last boss in this space shooter is another amazing, progressive techno song that almost makes me think it could have been composed classically and then translated into techno.

Final Fantasy VIII - Legendary Beast - This song ranks as one of my favorite Nobuo Uematsu songs ever. The epic mood of the battle is expertly conveyed through the intense rhythm of the snare drum, incredible melody of the violens, and decisive support from the brass.

Vagrant Story - Ogre - As one of the most frightening songs on the OST, this song shows how great a composer Hitoshi Sakimoto is. In just over two minutes, it builds from a low, anxious violen rhythm to one of the most startling climaxes I've heard from a battle theme.

Tsugunai - Battle with the Devil.

Just your typical Mitsuda Choir-Madness. Great song, nicely executed.

I LOVE Thermosphere, too. Like Zeratul said, this is one of the greatest Boss-Battle themes.

Is "Madness" from Einhänder also a boss battle theme? I've been led to believe it is, and that would rank pretty highly along with "Thermosphere".

Some other good ones:

"Death Ballad" - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Powerful orchestral stuff. I used to not like it as much as "Festival of Servants", but my taste in music seems to have changed quite a bit since then and now I like it a lot more.

"Enchanted Banquet" - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Definitely one that takes some getting used to. A lot of people hate the opera-style singing. I love it. But what's even better is the music itself, especially when it gets to the chaotic bit in the middle of the track.

"Mighty Blow" - Star Ocean: The Second Story OST

You know you're listening to an immensely talented composer when he can write a fast-paced piece of music that's completely atonal and still have it sound so damn good. The insane synth solo towards the end is pure genius. It sounds almost like completely random notes are being played at times, but somehow it all fits together to sound, once again, so damn good.

"Integral Body and Imperfect Soul" - Star Ocean: The Second Story OST

I don't care how many times people go on and on about "One-Winged Angel" - this remains my favourite final battle theme. I just love everything about it, and the arranged version is great too.

"Confidence in the Domination" - Valkyrie Profile

Another chaotic track (just how I like my battle themes). I've never played Valkyrie Profile, but I don't think anything could pump you up for a boss battle quite like this.

And, finally, don't know if it's a battle theme or not, but:

"A Searing Struggle" - Ys III: Wanderers from Ys (PC Engine)

Is it? The track name would suggest it is. This one doesn't require much explanation - it just has an amazing melody and that's all it needs.

Yes, Madness is the theme to the midboss of level 5 in Einhander. It's another of my favorites from the OST, but for me doesn't make the cut for the high ranking themes I listed. Thermosphere just moves so much more compared to it.

As for honorable mentions, I'd include:

Einhander - Madness
Incarnation of the Devil - Star Ocean 2
Death Ballad - Castlevania: SotN
Enchanted Banquet - Castlevania: SotN
Betrayal - Tales of Destiny
A Warring God - Breath of Fire 4
Donden and Conflict of Dragons - Breath of Fire 3
Elegy of War - Legaia Duel Saga
Cocytus Battle and Kuiper Tentacle Battle - Wild Arms 2
Wyvern, Dark Elemental, and Battle with Tieger and Neesa - Vagrant Story
Thunder Force V Perfect System - Fatherless Baby, Duel of Top, The Justice Ray Part Two
Parasite Eve - Under the Progress, Plosive Attack
Front Mission 3 - Fort Invasion, Base Invasion

Just the ones that come to me off the top of my head (ie. no particular order):

FFX - Summoned Beast Battle
Ys III - The Strongest Foe (final boss)
Langrisser II - Der Endkampf
Ys IV - Battle #58
SoM - The Oracle
FFV - Battle with Gilgamesh
LoM - Darkness Nova

I'm sure I'm forgetting a track or two...

Hmm, i guess i'll pick just ONE favorite instead of just naminge every battle theme out there ;p. I guess i'll say One Winged Angel from FFVII, it's a boss battle, but i guess it still counts, yeah? *shrug*

Summoned Beast Battle - FFX

Steel Giant - Xenogears

Demon's Gig - Shadow Hearts

The vocals in Demon's Gig were effective in giving each battle a more moody quality. Great songs all round.

I haven't played the game in a while, but I've also alwaws enjoyed the Ice Dragon and Steam Knight battle themes in Brave Fencer Musashi. I often forget how good they are since I haven't bought the OST yet.

Ugh, too hard to think now (I'm in school) but a few do stand out:

Integral Body and Perfect Soul from SO2
Summoned Beast Battle from FFX
Enemy Attack from FFX

I'll think of many more later, perhaps when I'm at home and not in school. :)

Seiken Densetsu 2 - Last Battle
Seiken Densetsu 3- Nuclear Fusion, Faith total Machine

I love too much from the Final Fantasy series to pick a few. The battle against the elements from FF IV, Force Your Way (FF VIII), Battle 2 (FF IX), Battle With Seymour (FF X), Battle 2 (FF XI) are all fantastic.

I also like Boss Battle (FFMQ, Lunar 2) as well. And there's probably tons of others.

Far too many choices but, as cliche as it probably is, I really, really enjoy Fighting from FFVII. Of all the "special" battle themes I'd say either Imbroglio from Shadow Hearts or The Extreme from Final Fantasy VIII pwn me the most.

Another mention from insignificant me:

I always liked the Star Ocean (2) Battle theme, especially the remixed one on the 2nd Story Arrange Album.

Other than that, Grandia Battle Music is rocking your house! Some "Battle" Musics just don't feel like doing battle. But Noriyuki Iwadare always gets that right, I think.

I agree with Rince that Iwadare has a knack for battle themes. Some of my faves:

Lunar The Silver Star - Battle
Lunar Eternal Blue - Final Boss Battle
Lunar Silver Star Story - Battle (based on the Lunatic Parade arrangement)
Persona 2 Innocent Sin - Battle
Persona 2 Eternal Punishment - Battle, Boss Battle
Vay - Final Boss Battle
Arcana - Battle, Boss Battle, and Final Boss Battle (they all rock)
Phantasy Star II - Boss Battle
Phantasy Star IV - that evil dude's battle theme...Zeno, was it?
Xenogears - Final Boss Battle
Wild Arms - Zed's Battle
Wild Arms III - Battle
Lufia II - Boss Battle, Sinistral Battle
Final Fantasy IV - Boss Battle
Final Fantasy VI - Battle

Ahh, there must be others...

My favorite battle track is historically Todfiend from SaGa Frontier II. But recently I tend to like Feldschlacht I or III better than Todfiend, and Glittering Sword and Path Destroyer from Suikoden III are challenging Todfiend for tops.

I remember a discussion in a chatroom not too long ago about "your favourite final battle theme". I was rather depressed, because I don't play too many of the games I listen to, so I can't tell a final battle theme from a battle theme... This is definetly easier to answer though.

After Burner [After Burner] from S.S.T. Band Live and After Burner played during battle scenes in After Burner should be sufficent, right? If I have to select an RPG battle theme... Geese's Theme isn't too bad either eh?

For RPGs it has to be...
Battle 1 (Tenshi no Uta)
Fighting of the Spirits (Tales of Phantasia)
For Achieve (Star Ocean)
Battle 3 (Estpolis Denki 2)
The Flame and the Arrow (Rudra no Hihou)
Four Noble Devils (Romancing SaGa 3)
Battle 2 (Mystic Quest Legend)

3rd Place: Dragon Quest 6 - Main Battle Theme. I NEVER get tired of this song.

2nd Place: Final Battle - Zelda 64. I think I was never that much HYPED UP playing a final boss battle than the one when Ganondorf turns into Ganon. And Dispite the limited music capabilities of the N64, the final battle theme came together beautifully. Props to remixed Zelda64 album for a nice remix as well.

1st Place: Zwei!! - Demon King Vespar. It's just the mix with the celtic stuff that makes me love this song so much. Starts out slowly, but then it really picks up. The Zwei!! Super Arranged version is even better. Ironicly, I've never actually played this game, althought I hear it's mindnumingly too cute, which is what scares me.

Very Honnerable Mentions:
The Decisive Battle (FF6) Played by the Black Mages. I can only imagine all of the fanboys melting into a puddle had the song been like this in the game. Hey Square Enix! You'd done Dragon Quest Revamps, so how about some 3d revamps of FF6 or FF4? (You know, just release them here, so I can't weep that I can't play Dragon Quest 4 remixed because I don't know japanese. )

Megaman 3 (Wily Battle) - Yes, I know. But I like it. Again, I think it's a nostaligia thing.

Hmmm... I don't really listen to that many RPG soundtracks and get blown away by battle themes - they're not usually my kind of thing. * shrugs * Here's some non-RPG recent favourites of mine, though...

Freedom Fighters OST - 06 - The Battle For Freedom
(It's one of the tunes that sometimes kicks in when you charge into a firefight - rolling breaks and big, booming synth orchestra. Frequently sent shivers down my spine when I was rushing the enemy positions. As Sean Connery said, what the hell, you've got to die of something... :D )
ZanacXZanac OST - 14 - No Feel ~ Reply
(It's the boss battle tune from this awesome vertical shoot-em-up, a short'n'sweet little piece of thundering trance; quite repetitive, but a strong production, a neat riff and a lovely four-part modulation make every boss confrontation so damn white-knuckle tense. Just hearing it makes me want to break out the game again.)

and an unknown track from The I Of The Dragon, one of the tunes that plays when you start combat - all grandiose Hans Zimmer-esque synth orchestra, pounding tribal drums and loud martial (or maybe religious) chanting. It felt like some kind of fantasy version of Ace Combat 4, actually, wheeling and banking through the sky whilst horrible things down on the ground pelted me with fire and I threw spells at them to tear them to shreds. Many of the battle themes from that game are outstanding - I'd love to see the soundtrack get some kind of proper release, but I doubt it's going to happen. Oh well.

1. The War of Genesis 3 - Destruction
Gotta love the choir, the guitars, everything ^_^

2. The War of Genesis 3 - Devil's Rhapsody
Same as above, just without choir and guitars, still one of the most intense battle themes ever.

3. The War of Genesis 3 - Brave Force 2
I've played that track to some people who don't like game music and they said it's stolen from somewhere else. That's like the best feedback this song could possibly get from those persons ;) The melody is really catchy.

4. Tempest - Battle ver. 2
While the first battle theme more sounds like a worldmap theme, this one is amazing. I have not played the game, but I would if just for that battle theme^^

5. The War of Genesis 3 - Bloody Day
In contrast to the other battle themes, this one lacks a bit energy, yet I can't think of any better Final Battle Theme. Plus it includes guitars again :D

hmm..I have a slight bias towards Softmax music, it seems :/

Well, for me it's really hard to narrow all of my favorite battle themes down, so I'm just gonna try to list a lot of my absolute favorites (in no particular order) and say why... XD;;

Final Fantasy Tactics:
Trisection: I just love the pace of this song and it fits so well with what was happening in the game. Strong, serious, and emotional I guess... >.>
Decisive Battle: Just like Trisection I suppose, all the songs in FFT fit perfectly and really enhance the story. I like the buildup in this song, at first sort of loud and really invovling, then near the middle to end it becomes low, I like that effect. =P
Under the Stars: I like this fight in the game, and to me, it just sounds like a really pretty song.. Not your conventional fight song, which is interesting. A beautiful, relaxing song, but also fits nicely in a fight.
Apoplexy (Variation): When it first heard it played in FFT, I really loved the fast paced, serious sound of it, and the song added a lot to the fight you were in. I couldn't find this song for YEARS, so being able to listen to it all the time now makes me appreciate it even more.. <.<;;

Chrono Trigger:
Battle with Magus: This song is a classic, at least to me it is. Fits absolutely perfect in the game and really makes the scene, as well as the character, memorable. Not to mention the song is just damn awesome. XD
Boss Battle 2: Definitely a cool sounding boss theme, it starts off awesome and stays that way throughout the song. Just gives off a nice boisterous, serious tone.

Valkyrie Profile - Actually, I liked a lot of the other tracks more then the boss fight songs, but the entire ost is awesome, so whatever.. XD;

Vestigal Dream: The fight was cool (but then again all of em are XP) and I love how it starts off. The entire song sounds like something terrible is going on and that you should be afraid, it just sounds pretty cool and fits well.

Xenogears:
The One Who Is Torn Apart: The character this song plays for is extremely cool, which is one of the reasons I like it, but I also love slow pace of the song.. it just sounds creepy and dangerous.
One Who Bares Fangs at God: Another slow paced , deep song... the way it starts out and then the vocals come in is pretty neat, it has a nice buildup which gives a unique effect. I also love where it plays in the game.
Light from the Netherworld: This song just leaves an impression on you (at least for me >.>), and the fight that it plays with. Again, it starts off slow and then starts building up really amazing and uses vocals in the backround well. It just gives the sense that something serious is about to go down and the song fits the scenes in which it plays PERFECTLY.

Star Ocean 2: There are ton of awesome fight songs in this game, and they're ALL extremely awesome. I'm too lazy to list them all.. <.< Integral Body and Imperfect Soul, Mighty Blow, The Incarnation of Devil, etc etc... All so awesome.. ;__;

FF6:
The Fierce Battle: The first time I heard this song I thought it was damn awesome, and I still do. The fight it plays in during this game is also extremely cool. The entire song just gives off the sense that something cool and dangerous is about to happen.

FF7:
Still More Fighting:I love the guitar in the song, makes it sound badass, as well as the tune of the keyboard synthesizer. Near the middle when the song changes is also awesome, I love that part. =3

Suikoden 2:
The Chase: The part where this song plays is AWESOME, I just love it. It goes along perfectly with the part it plays at as well, lemme tell ya... <<;
Iron Fist of Anger: It only plays once in the game, but it's an awesome song. It just sounds hardcore and loud, which I love.

Legend of Mana:
Silence of Time: Where it plays in the game is pretty cool and fits wonderfully, I love the entire creepy serious sound while the song plays.

Breath of Fire 4:
A Raging Emperor's Banquet - I've never played much of this game, but this track is definitely one of my favorites from the ost. It just sound so different and unique, it really caught my attention, I just love the strangeness of it..

Indeed yes. If Sakimoto can get something so dynamic and so vibrant out of the PSOne sound hardware, there's no excuse for Uematsu. The sound palette on FFT is just... awesome. Not even that many different noises for a PSOne, it's like he's intentionally limiting himself or something, and yet the timbre on his orchestra noises is just so... not realistic as such, but the feel is definitely there. I remember when I first heard Decisive Battle, and I didn't know it was a different composer. I was all "Why just this one game? What the hell's he been saving himself for?"

Hiya... just a passer-by here. There are so many good battle themes, I won't spend too long brainstorming all my faves because there'd be too many. I am a big shmup fan, I believe these games have the liveliest and most progressive music you will find in games, or even anywhere. They blend adrenalin and beauty seamlessly. (I noticed a few people already mentioned some r-type and einhander, sweet) One slightly obscure yet brilliant soundtrack (for an obscure game I suppose) found on the game cd itself as redbook audio is the Mega/Sega-CD's Robo Aleste (Dennin Aleste). The stage 1(+) boss theme is a wonderful piece of oldschool boss music magic. Absolutely awesome. Chase it down if you haven't heard it. I think it's been in one of the slots of my cd player still from 9 months ago :P

Strangely enough, as I was writing this, the G-Darius ost in my cd player (listening to it for the first time, have played and beaten the game ages ago though) reached track 13. Its title is "Adam". I recognized it immediately, it's the final boss tune, I believe (the huge mofo of a whale from memory? An epic battle, as are all G-Darius battles, ha). Quite a coincidence there :) A must-listen-to track.

Argh. More are popping into my head :(

If you have not heard the Giga Wing 1 + 2 final boss tracks, chase them down! Gigawing 1 does not have an orchestral score, most would find it ordinary(I think it's quite good), but its final boss has an industrial ambient electro (for lack of better words) track that is too beautiful for words. I'm referring to the arranged Dreamcast version of this tune (that is, I am 99% sure it differs to the arcade pcb tune, though they are still pretty similar). Gigawing 2's soundtrack is a work of genius, I'd say one of the most original and amazing orchestral scores for any game (or otherwise) ever. In fact, it puts most rpg's to shame (though being a different genre, its music will have a different purpose and effect). The Final Form theme of this game's last boss I would say is also too beautiful for words.

Off the top of my head, a quick mention to Dodonpachi Dai Ou Jou and Ketsui final boss themes. Wicked. The DDPDOJ track is called "Kouryuu" and is the "last boss" theme, not to be confused with the "true last boss" theme entitled "Hihachi"! :P (That track is also pretty cool, but it sounds like it came out of a Psykio shooter, rather than a Cave shooter heh). The Ketsui track for the "true last boss" on the other hand, entitled "NO REMORSE" also starts off sounding like a Psykio track, though with a frenzied drum and bass beat driving it, but when it kicks into the high energy strings it just pieces itself together to become one hell of a track.

Darius Gaiden's level 2(+) boss theme (from memory... this is taking the top route through the game btw) . It's track 3 "Burst Out" on the official ost.

An oldschool vote for Gradius boss theme! So primitive, yet so hypnotic and unlike anything you will ever hear outside of game music. Brilliant :)

Non-shmuppy, yet still in the action vein, the arranged track to Bubble Symphony's last boss... track 2 called "Sorceror drunk". A wickedly kinky halloweenish rock track. I don't know if arranged tracks count, but there you go.

Must. Stop. Writing. Just had to expand the love for shmups, and action games in general :) Sick of reading about tired old rpg scores... (don't hate me for that last comment! I paid way too much for my Alundra ost... but it was worth it...)

Yeah, I loooove Robo Aleste's music. And I know the battle theme you're talking about, it IS pretty good. I also really like the title screen BGM and just about every single stage theme. Ah, brings back memories. Too bad Spriggan's (PCE SCD) music wasn't as good as Aleste's.
